THE TIBETAN SPANIEL

The Tibetan Spaniel is an ancient breed of dog originating in Tibet. This small and intelligent dog, with a keen eyesight and loud bark, was bred by Buddhist monks to keep watch over their monasteries. Due to their appearance, the thick neck mane and feathered tail, they were referred to as little lion dogs. Today the Tibetan Spaniel is a companion dog.

Tibetan Spaniels come in a mixture of colours from black, white, cream, gold or red, and can be solid, shaded and multi-coloured. Often there are white markings on the feet. Tibetan Spaniels have a silky double coat which is short and smooth on the face and front legs and medium length on the rest of the body. They have feathering on the ears, toes and tail. Their coat is relatively easy to maintain and weekly brushing will keep it free of loose hair. They coat does not have aa doggy odour and they only require bathing every few months as needed.

Because of their small size, Tibetan Spaniels are indoor dogs and well suited to city living, however being a sociable dog, they do not enjoy being left at home alone for long periods and can start barking and being mischievous. They are an independent dog, who is aloof with strangers, yet affectionate towards their family. They are protective of children, yet because of their size, should be monitored with smaller children. They make excellent watchdogs and will bark to alert you of anything that seems unusual. Tibetan Spaniels usually get along well with other dogs and cats.

Tibetan Spaniels are an intelligent and lively breed, yet can be stubborn and determined. Their intelligence makes them fairly easy to train yet their stubbornness requires patience, so early and consistent training is recommended. Tibetan Spaniels have a tendency to ignore commands and are not known for their obedience, as such they should be walked on a lead as they may wander off to explore. They are also quite the escape artist and a secure yard is a must.

The Tibetan Spaniel is very active for it's size, and requires and enjoys regular exercise or plenty of playtime. The average life span is 12 to 15 years.
